Beauty Sleep (#20/30)

To the girl whose mother is explaining "beauty sleep" to her in the lobby of Jerusalem Garden

There is a cute little girl
in paisley leggings and a striped top
at that age where clothing clearly doesn't matter
it's just one more thing to do before she gets to
break outside in the sunlight

paisley turns to grass stains
stripes turn to lines on which to write
the lovingly skinned elbows of summer
dirt looks the same on any kind of kid

what do i want to say to you? that "beauty sleep" isn't gendered,
that beauty isn't gendered
but that your misunderstanding
gives me hope
and your questioning
gives me hope
